First sitting
A 30-Minute First Vinyl Cataloging Session
Do not try to finish the collection tonight. Give a handful of records a home, add a little context, then stop.

Your checklist is ready while MyVinyl checks your sign-in.
Start with a small, visible edge
Pick the records closest to where you listen, not the shelf that seems most impressive. A first session works best when you can see the beginning and the end: one cube, one row, or the small stack that has been waiting beside the turntable.
Keep the physical records in the order they already have. You are making a first map, not staging a total reorganization. If a title needs more research, leave a simple note and move on.
Give each record one useful memory
The catalog details help identify what you own. Your own note helps future-you remember why it is there. One short detail is enough: 'top shelf, left bay,' 'cleaned in spring,' or 'found with Maya after the show.'
Avoid trying to write a review for every album. The point is to make your archive legible when you are deciding what to play, what to pull for a Record Room, or what you need to protect later.
- Use a shelf note when a record is difficult to find.
- Use a condition note only when it affects how you handle or enjoy it.
- Use a memory note sparingly, for records that deserve a little story.
End before cataloging becomes a chore
The best signal from a first session is not a high count. It is knowing exactly what to do when you sit down again. Keep one small unfinished stack or a note about the next shelf, then let the records go back to being records.
When you are ready, the sustainable cataloging guide can help you choose a rhythm that fits ordinary weeks rather than an ambitious one-off project.
A note on MyVinyl
Your routine can stay entirely private.
MyVinyl is a personal collection host and organizer. Use it to keep your records close, shape a Record Room, and decide what—if anything—you want to share.
Useful questions
A little reassurance before you begin.
What if I cannot identify a pressing in 30 minutes?
Add what you can confirm, write a brief note about the uncertainty, and continue. A calm archive can contain questions without being incomplete.
Do I need an account to use this checklist?
No. The checklist is local to this browser and can be used before you decide whether MyVinyl is right for your collection.
