Reconcile Your Vinyl Shelves with a Discogs Import

An import is a starting point, not the final word. Let the shelf and list straighten each other out.

Review your Discogs import

Let the import arrive before you reorganize anything

After you authorize MyVinyl on Discogs, MyVinyl imports the collection already connected to your Discogs account. Open the imported collection as a working list, then keep your records where they are while you get oriented.

It is normal for the physical and digital views to disagree at first. A record may have moved rooms, a recent purchase may not have been added on Discogs, or an older entry may describe a release you no longer own. None of that means you failed to catalog correctly.

Compare one physical unit at a time

Pick a shelf, crate, or listening stack. Move through it in a single direction so you know where you stopped. As you compare, sort differences into gentle categories: present on shelf but missing digitally, listed digitally but absent from shelf, and present in both but needing a closer pressing check.

Do not try to resolve every difference while standing at the shelf. A short open-questions list preserves momentum. You can return later with better light, a magnifier, or time to compare labels and runouts.

  • Mark records that are physically present but not in the imported list.
  • Set aside digital entries you cannot find without deleting them in a hurry.
  • Flag uncertain pressings for a separate, slower review.
  • Give the completed shelf a simple location name in your archive.

Use re-sync as a refresh, not a substitute for attention

MyVinyl can re-sync the collection connected through Discogs. That can help bring in changes you have made there, but it cannot tell you whether a record has quietly moved to a different room or whether two copies are being stored together.

Keep your personal context in the archive you maintain around the import: location, care needs, a note about a duplicate, or a reminder to verify a release. Discogs is a separate service, and MyVinyl is not affiliated with Discogs.

A note on MyVinyl

Your archive can grow at your own pace.

MyVinyl is a private-by-default personal collection organizer. Browse your collection, shape a Record Room, and choose whether to share it. If that would be useful, a free account is there when you are ready.

Useful questions

A little clarity for the next step

Should I delete an imported entry if I cannot find the record?
Not immediately. First make a short list of missing records and check likely places: another room, a lending stack, storage, or a recent sale or trade. A little uncertainty is safer than a hurried cleanup.
Does a re-sync know where my physical records are?
No. A collection sync can refresh the connected Discogs collection, but your shelf locations and real-world context still need your own review and notes.
